Armed conflict displaces 2,060 in Davao del Norte

MANILA, Philippines - More than 2,000 people fled their homes Monday in Davao del Norte in the wake of an armed conflict between government troops and suspected communist rebels. The National Disaster Coordinating Council said Tuesday the conflict occurred in Sitio Sambulungan in Palma Gil village and Sitio Tibucag in Dagohoy village in Talaingod town. "Unstable peace and order condition has affected a total of 412 families (or) 2,060 persons. No casualties reported," it said on its Web site. It added the conflict was due to "ongoing military operations against the communist terrorists." The NDCC said the affected families are taking refuge at Sitio Poblacion, staying in tents and shanties they have constructed. - GMANews.TV
