MANILA, Philippines - Despite repeated announcements of a no-fee policy in public schools, the Department of Education (DepEd) hotlines were clogged with inquiries about fee collections on the first day of classes.
Operators of the "Oplan Balik Eskwela" hotlines said most of the calls they got early Monday involved fee collections.
"May nagsusumbong na nangongolekta ng fees, may nagtatanong sa school fees, naniningil pa rin [Many called up to report that fees were still being collected]," an operator told dzBB radio.
The operators, who were called at random, did not give details of what schools the complainants were referring to.
Other questions involved birth certificates from the National Statistics Office and other requirements for enrolment.
Earlier, Education Secretary Jesli Lapus urged parents to call their “Oplan Balik Eskwela" command center at 636-1663 and text 0919-4560027 for complaints. - GMANews.TV
