VP Noli tops anew in Pulse Asia's preference survey


MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Noli de Castro has remained as most preferred among presidential bets for the 2010 elections based on pollster Pulse Asia's latest preference survey. However, De Castro’s 18-percent preference rating puts him in a tight race with Senator Francis Escudero with 17 percent. Former President Joseph “Erap" Estrada is also pulling close with 15 percent. Pulse Asia’s Ulat ng Bayan, a public opinion survey, was done from May 4 to 17, 2009 – a year before the forthcoming polls. Sen. Manuel Villar Jr. came fourth with 14 percent, followed by Sen. Manuel Roxas II with 13 percent. Sen. Loren Legarda got seven percent while Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay and Sen. Panfilo Lacson each got four percent each. Sen. Richard Gordon, Philippine Long Distance Co. chair Manuel Pangilinan, Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno, and Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr each got one-percent preference rating. The rest on the trail are Jesus is Lord Movement leader Bro. Eddie Villanueva (0.4 percent), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chair Bayani Fernando (0.3 percent), El Shaddai leader Bro. Mike Velarde (0.3 percent), and Pampanga Gov. and priest-on-leave Ed Panlilio. Comparative analysis Comparatively, De Castro's rating slipped by one percent from a 19 percent rating during the Pulse Asia survey on February 2009, while Escudero remained at 17 percent. Villar’s rating also decreased by one point from 15 percent during the February Pulse Asia survey. Estrada’s also dropped by a point from 16 percent during February. [See table.] Roxas’ rating was the most improved by five percentage points from his previous eight percent in February. But while Roxas’s preference ratings soared, Legarda’s plunged. In the February survey, she got 12 percent – a five percent decline to her May 2009 rating of seven percent. Lacson’s rating declined by two percentage points while Binay increased by two percentage points. Pulse Asia said that the survey results fell within the error margin of +/- 3 percent. Per region based the latest May survey, Escudero is the run-away favorite in the National Capital Region (NCR) with 26 percent, followed by De Castro with 15 percent. [See table above.] The two possible presidential aspirants are neck to neck in Luzon with 18 percent each, but they are clobbered by Roxas, who lorded it over in Visayas with a 22 percent preferential rating in the region. Estrada, meanwhile, dominated in Mindanao with 27 percent. He is followed by De Castro with 21 percent, and by Escudero and Roxas with 12 percent each. As per economic classes, Escudero, Roxas and Villar were the top three choices in the ABC classes with 26, 18 and 13 percent, respectively. De Castro is the top pick of the D class with 17 percent. Following him are Escudero and Estrada with 16 percent and 15 percent, respectively. De Castro also dominated the E Class with 25 percent.
