PBA: Purefoods survives Rain or Shine comeback

MANILA, Philippines – Purefoods bucked Rain or Shine’s furious fourth-quarter rally to squeeze out an 84-82 win to tie their best-of-three quarterfinals series against the Elasto Painters in the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum. Marquin Chanlder’s free throws, off a foul by Jai Lewis, gave the TJ Giants some breathing room with 1.2 seconds left in the game putting pressure on the Elasto Painters to either send the game into overtime or win the game with a three-pointer. Rob Wainwright could have sent the game into a five-minute extension but his shot attempt at about 17 feet failed to hit its mark. Chandler topped the scoring for the Giants with 25 points while James Yap added 18 more behind a 6-of-14 field goal shooting. Wainwright paced RoS’ losing cause with 22 points while Lewis contributed 20 markers. Game 3 will be played after the week-long break brought by the Southeast Asian Basketball Association men's championship in Medan, Indonesia. The winner of the Purefoods-Rain or Shine series will face the second-seeded Ginebra Gin Kings in the best-of-seven semifinals contest. – GMANews.TV
