Lacson to consult supporters on political plans

MANILA, Philippines - Senator Panfilo Lacson is open to the idea of running for vice president in next year’s national elections, but said he has to consult his supporters first. He also said he is not likely to approach presidential bets and offer to be his or her running mate. “Parang medyo kakapalan yata ng mukha na (sabihin), uy kunin mo naman akong VP mo. Di naman tama ‘yan," he said in an interview on dzXL radio. [Approaching someone and asking him to make you his running mate is a shameful act.] Asked about his political plans for 2010, including running for vice president, he said, “Siyempre magkakaroon ng consultation sa mga supporter [Of course I’ll consult my supporters]. Lacson on Friday announced that he is “retiring" from the 2010 presidential race. His announcement came a day after his former subordinate at the police force, former police Senior Superintendent Cezar Mancao II, returned to the country and vowed to "tell the truth" on the Dacer-Corbito case. Lacson, former chief of the Philippine National Police, is being implicated in the killing of publicist Salvador “Bubby" Dacer and Emmanuel Corbito in 2000. He has denied involvement in the case.

In the radio interview, he said he had decided to drop his presidential plans for 2010 as early as Sunday last week when he made an assessment of whether he had enough resources to mount a serious campaign. “Although wala pang campaign period lumalabas naman talaga, let’s be practical and realistic about it, nagsimula ang kampanya noong isang taon pa. Dahil kung di ka naman sasabay talagang maiiwanan ka. Ang kalakaran ngayon maski ganitong kaaga napakalaking gastos ang kailangang harapin mo. At yan ang pangunahing kadahilanan wala talagang magastos," he said. [Officially, it is not yet the campaign period. But let’s face it, the actual campaign period started as early as last year. And if you don’t start your campaign to keep up with your prospective rivals, you’re dead meat. This, and the reality of lack of funds, prompted me to drop out.] - GMANews.TV
