MANILA, Philippines - Government workers can expect a salary increase starting next month.
This after President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Wednesday signed Congressional Joint Resolution Number 4, which enacts into law the Salary Standardization Law III.
The signing was held at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) before she embarked on a four-day working visit to Japan.
Expected to benefit from SSL III are 1.145 million government workers.
Presidential political adviser Gabriel Claudio said an implementing executive order would be issued very soon.
JCR 4 authorizes the President to modify the compensation and position classification system of civilian personnel, and the base pay schedule of the military and uniformed personnel in the government.
Deputy presidential spokesman Lorelei Fajardo said SSL 3 would raise by 50 percent the salaries of government personnel within four years, especially teachers and soldiers.
She said the new law would also make the wages of government employees more competitive with those in the private sector.
According to JCR 4, the salary increase for national government workers and those working for government corporations and financial institutions would take effect on July 1, while those in the local government units would be on January 1, 2010.
The budget department said once the SSL 3 is fully implemented in 2012, the position of Teacher 1 and Nurse 1 would increase from P12,026 to P18,088 per month. For Medical Officers I (doctors) and Legal Officers I (lawyers), the increase would be from P15,181 to P27,198.
Utility workers and those who are in clerical positions will receive a 30-percent salary increase.
For LGU employees, their salary rates will be determined on the basis of their LGU's income class and financial capability, to be charged against their respective local government funds.
For government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs) and government financial institutions (GFIs), their salary increase shall come from their respective corporate funds in their approved corporate operating budgets. - GMANews.TV
