(Update) MANILA, Philippines – The San Beda Red Cubs jumpstarted their title bid in the juniors’ division of the 85th NCAA basketball tournament with a masterful 122-42 rout of the Mapua Red Robins on Sunday at the San Juan gym.
Determined to give long-time coach Ato Badolato a memorable send-off party this season, the Red Cubs took the game out of the Robins’ reach right at the first canto when they seized a insurmountable 25-point tear.
Al Gotladera banged in 18 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and three steals while Adam Abatayo and Arthur dela Cruz each fired 17 points for the Taytay-based dribblers, who were ahead by 37 at the turn.
Baser Amer joined the shooting parade by firing 10 points, five assists and four steals to help San Beda notch its 80-point triumph and herald the Red Cub’s serious bid to win one title before Badolato relinquishes his coaching chores next season.
“This is my last year as coach of San Beda. I’ll be concentrating on my duties as athletic director after this," said Badolato, who has steered the school to 15 of its 16 high school crowns since taking over the reins in 1972.
Interestingly, the Red Robins were the only ones better than the Red Cubs with a record 18 league titles.
Of the years Badolato spent with the Benedictine school, it was only last year when San Beda failed to make it to the semifinals.
This season, the Red Cubs want to get back in the big way—with a title.
“We hope we’ll win this year," said Badolato, who produced not just some of the best players in the country today but also the finest coaches in the current crop.
Not quite as impressive in pulling off its first win was defending four-peat titlist San Sebastian College, which struggled with a 62-60 win over University of Perpetual Help.
Veteran point guard Jerome Delgado bailed the Staglets by sinking two crucial free-throws off a foul by Joel Jolangcob with only .8 of a seconds remaining.
SSC coach Raymund Valenzona said the struggle is quite expected this year given the makeup of their rookie-laden team.
“Expected na namin ang ganito, lahat siguradong magiging mahirap na kalaban para sa amin kahit na ang Mapua," said Valenzona, who lost starters Raffy Gusi, Almond Vosotros, last year’s finals MVP Arvie Bringas and Yutien Andrada to graduation.
“Mabuti nga hindi bumitaw, kasi puro bago talaga, siyam yung rookies ko at dalawa lang yung natirang beterano," he added.
In the other game, the Letran Squires drew strength from Jarelyn Tampus’ 32 points and Glenn Khobuntin’s 28 points and 25 boards as they defused the Jose Rizal Light Bombers, 95-77. - GMANews.TV
