Ginebra’s Helterbrand is Fiesta Cup’s best player

MANILA, Philippines – Jay-Jay Helterbrand was voted as the best player of the conference (BPC) in the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup Friday night, becoming only the third player to repeat as winner of the award in the same tournament for two successive seasons. The Ginebra shooting guard won by a wide margin over Arwind Santos of Burger King, Dondon Hontiveros of San Miguel Beer, Coca-Cola’s Asi Taulava and Talk ‘N Text’s Jimmy Alapag. Helterbrand collected 1,357 points after votes compiled from the media, players, Solar Sports, the PBA Commissioner’s Office and statistical points were tabulated. He topped the media, PBA and players’ votes. Santos ended up with 857 points after getting the votes from Solar Sports. Hontiveros wound up third (423) with Taulava, the front-runner in the statistical points (325), and Alapag (316) rounding out the top five placers. Helterbrand averaged 17.7 points – best among locals this conference – 4.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists in the conference. His average in assists is second only to Alapag (6.3) this tournament while leading Barangay Ginebra to a second straight Fiesta Cup Finals appearance sans Kings’ top gunner Mark Caguioa. This is only the third time in PBA history that a player has won the BPC in the same tournament for the second straight year. Nelson Asaytono was the first to accomplish it when he won the BPC for two consecutive All-Filipino Cup seasons (1997-98) with Danny Ildefonso winning it twice – the first coming in the Commissioner’s Cup and then in the Governors’ Cup (2000-01). Gabe Freeman of San Miguel Beer, on the other hand, was named as the tournament’s Best Import beating David Noel of Ginebra, Burger King’s Shawn Daniels and Jai Lewis of Rain or Shine. Freeman tallied 1,741 points, with Noel a far second with 561. Daniels had 495 while Lewis 481. – GMANews.TV
