MANILA, Philippines - Despite the economic crisis and the A(H1N1) scare, tourist arrivals at the world-famous Boracay Island resort increased in the first five months of 2009, tourism officials said.
Visayas-based The News Today reported 337,666 tourist arrivals in Boracay, 5.16 percent higher than the 321,094 in the same period in 2008.
Department of Tourism (DOT) Western Visayas regional director Edwin Trompeta said this showed the tourism industry in the region remained strong during this crucial time.
Of the tourist arrivals, Korea ranked first with 30,369.
The report cited the number of Korean students who take time out to visit Boracay island in Aklan province, together with their vacationing parents.
Second is China with 11,084 tourists. The direct flight from China to Kalibo has contributed much to the high number of Chinese tourists, the report said.
Third were tourists from Taiwan with 7,014; United States fourth with 6,155; Hong Kong fifth with 3,201; United Kingdom sixth with 2,835; Australia seventh with 2,669; Germany eighth with 2,660; Japan ninth with 2,357; and Canada tenth with 2,264. - GMANews.TV
