Cory Aquino’s condition ‘still stable’ – Siytangco

MANILA, Philippines – President Corazon Aquino’s health remains stable, her former spokesperson said Thursday, following rumors that the ailing democracy icon had already passed away. "She’s (Mrs. Aquino) okay, she’s still stable," said Lourdes “Deedee" Siytangco in a phone interview with GMANews.TV. Siytangco denounced those behind the text messages that said Mrs. Aquino had succumbed to colon cancer. “Naiinis talaga ako sa mga nagkakalat niyan. Wala namang magagawang mabuti ‘yan. [I condemn those who are spreading the rumors, which will only worsen the situation]," she said. On Thursday last week, Siytangco said the ailing former Philippine leader remained "stable, conscious, and aware." She also said Mrs. Aquino was even able to drink milk shake. Mrs. Aquino remains confined at the Makati Medical Center, where she was rushed last June due to loss of appetite and fluid build-up in her stomach. A series of novena Masses were held at the Greenbelt chapel in Makati City from July 1 to July 9 for her healing. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo also attended a Mass at the Malacañang Palace last Friday to offer prayers for Mrs. Aquino's recovery. No chemotherapy Last Monday, Mrs. Aquino’s daughter Kris said her mother had to stop the chemotherapy sessions as her body was too weak to undergo the treatment. [See: Cory’s body too week for chemotherapy, says Kris] “We wanted to clarify that Mom didn't choose to discontinue her chemotherapy, she was too weak to have more chemo done. Our Mom has never been a quitter, and her spirit is the strongest I've ever witnessed because of her deep faith in God," Kris wrote in an email to GMA vice president for news programs and television host Jessica Soho. Kris said the family had encouraged Mrs. Aquino to try all medical means to fight colon cancer, although they were aware that there is no permanent cure for her mother’s disease. The Aquino family earlier said the family “entrusts everything to God" the condition of the former Philippine leader. In March 2008, Mrs. Aquino’s children disclosed that she was diagnosed with colon cancer. She underwent an operation in May 2009 to remove part of her colon. Mrs. Aquino, the country’s first woman president, is the wife of the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., one of the staunchest critics of former President Ferdinand Marcos. She was installed to power in February 1986 following a civilian-backed military uprising. - GMANews.TV
