Pacquiao-Cotto duel whets fight fans’ appetite for action
For the latest Philippine news stories and videos, visit GMANews.TV A fight that whets fight fansâ appetite for action. This is how boxing experts see the showdown between pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and welterweight champ Miguel Cotto on November 14 in Las Vegas. âMaganda sapagkat isang direksyon lang ang patungo nito â paharap, patungo sa kalaban hindi umaatras," Filipino analyst Philip Ella Juico noted in an interview on GMAâs Unang Hirit Wednesday. ESPN.comâs boxing writer Dan Rafael expressed the same view, saying the pairing between two of the worldâs most exciting fighters who are both at the top of their games has excitement written all over it. âYou got two guys whoâs gonna come to throw down. Thereâs not gonna be a lot of dancing and moving," Rafael said on ESPN âBoxing fans wanna see action fights between top fighters (and) theyâve got it." The proximity of the Pacquiao-Cotto duel with another mega-matchup, Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Juan Manuel Marquez on September 19 makes it inevitable for ring aficionados to compare the two cards and discuss which one gets their fancy more. In fact, boxing site BadLeftHook started an online poll on this and as of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, 85% of the 435 votes counted went for Pacquiao-Cotto (370 votes) while 14% picked Mayweather-Marquez (65 votes). While Pacquiao-Cotto features action, Mayweather-Marquez is largely viewed as a fight between two counter-punchers. Rafael himself is more sold on the Pacman-Cotto brawl than the Mayweather-Marquez gig. âAs a fight fan, hands down, itâs Pacquiao versus Cotto. No disrespect to Mayweather and Marquez, theyâre both great fighters, theyâre both gonna be in the Hall of Fame, they both have a ton of skill. But I think what would get the juices flowing for boxing fans, at least it does for me, is the prospect of the action that weâll see (in Pacquiao-Cotto)," he said. Pacquiao and Cotto, stablemates at Top Rank promotions, have agreed in principle to meet at a catchweight of 145 lbs with the Filipino superstar getting a 65-35 share of the PPV pie, according to Pacquiaoâs lawyer Jeng Gacal. - GMANews.TV
