Report: 6 Cebu inmates confirmed with A(H1N1)

Six of 177 inmates at the Mandaue City Jail in the province of Cebu who showed flu-like symptoms last week were confirmed to have A(H1N1) infection, a radio report said Thursday.

Radio dzBB’s Cebu affiliate cited a report from Dr. Cora Lou Kintanar of the Department of Health (DOH) Central Visayas that the six were immediately given medication.

Kintanar said that as of Thursday, only two of the inmates still showed flu symptoms, and that there is no more cause for worry.

The 177 inmates showed flu-like symptoms since last week, and were immediately treated.

She said the rest of the inmates at the Mandaue City Jail have also been given Vitamin C to enhance their resistance against diseases.

Negative among Bulacan inmates

Last Monday, radio dzBB reported that 10 inmates in a jail in Bulacan province in northern Philippines were found to have flu-like symptoms and were separated from other inmates’ cells.

But provincial jail administrator Pearly Mendoza was quoted in the report as saying that the inmates appeared to have recovered fast after they were given medication.

As of posting time, there was no report of A(H1N1) infection among Bulacan inmates who had contracted flu.

As of July 9, 2009, the Health department has recorded 2,688 cases with a 95 percent recovery rate at 2,543.

Last Wednesday, swine-flu related deaths in the country climbed to five with the death of an American teacher in Leyte in Eastern Visayas.

As of July 6, the World Health Organization recorded 94,512 confirmed cases worldwide with 429 deaths.

UK advisory

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom cautioned its nationals in the Philippines Wednesday (UK time) to take extra precautions against the sustained community transmission of A(H1N1).

In its travel advisory updated July 22, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) also urged UK nationals to monitor the Philippine Department of Health for updates on mutant flu virus.

“There is sustained community transmission of Swine Flu (H1N1) in the Philippines. The Philippine Department of Health has a swine flu Web site which contains information about the latest situation and government response. You should also monitor local media reports for any developments and advice," it said. - GMANews.TV
