Maguindanao, Cotabato floods affect 9K families

Floods that hit parts of Cotabato and Maguindanao in southern Philippines since last weekend have affected at least 9,280 families, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said Monday. In its update as of 6 a.m. Monday, the NDCC said the 9,280 families were from 43 villages in Maguindanao and North Cotabato. "[A] portion of [the] National Highway in Sultan Kudarat (town in Maguindanao) is still flooded and not passable to light vehicles. Some commuters were being ferried by military trucks to pass through the flooded portion of the highway," the NDCC said. The flooding was due to the overflowing of waterways caused by continuous heavy downpour in the area, the NDCC said. Those affected include 7,065 failies in Sultan Kudarat town in Maguindanao, and 2,215 in Midsayap, Pigcawayan and Libungan towns in Cotabato. However, the NDCC said there has been no massive evacuation yet, with those who opted to stay in their flooded homes "advised" to "evacuate when necessary." It added some residents from the affected villages are temporarily staying with their relatives in the town. The NDCC said the Armed Forces of the Philippines Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) to alert all its disaster response and rescue units for any emergency. Relief items and medical supplies had been prepositioned at a makeshift Disaster Operations Center along the national highway in Salimbao village in Sultan Kudarat town. - GMANews.TV
