Selected University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) players will get the chance to learn from National Basketball Association (NBA) coach Erik Spoelstra in a one-day clinic on Thursday at the De La Salle Greenhills court in San Juan City.
Spoelstra, who became the first a Filipino-American and Asian to coach in the NBA, arrived Monday afternoon as part of the US Department of State’s Sports Envoy Program.
The clinic, a third of a series of training sessions designed to promote goodwill through basketball, is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. He will teach selected players from UAAP men’s and women’s teams.
An afternoon session is also scheduled with NCAA coaches and players at the San Beda gym.
Spoelstra, 38, also held a clinic in Zamboanga and another session organized by the Philippine Basketball Association.
Spoelstra was appointed as Miami’s head coach on April 28, 2008 after Heat president Pat Riley, who steered the team to the 2006 season crown, retired. He is considered to be the NBA’s youngest head coach and the first ever Asian to coach a North American professional sports team.
Prior to being elevated as Miami’s head coach, Spoelstra is a long-time assistant to Riley acting as the team’s director for scouting since 2001.
He’s also known for his superb game preparation and for making game plans against their opponents. He was also a teacher in the Heat’s Individual Player Development Program specializing in fundamentals, skill development and shooting. – GMANews.TV
