UN chief saddened over Cory death, pays tribute

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday (Manila time) voiced deep sadness over the death of former President Corazon Aquino.

Ban lauded Mrs. Aquino for her “exceptional courage and pivotal role in the restoration and consolidation of democracy in the Philippines."

“Mrs. Aquino will be remembered as a beacon of democracy not only in the Philippines but also around the world," Ban said in a statement issued by a spokesperson.

He extended his “sincere condolences to the bereaved family of the late President and to the Government and people of the Philippines."

Excerpts of the statement were posted on the UN Web site.
