NDCC: Jolina death toll hits 12; 2 remain missing


The death toll from tropical storm "Jolina" jumped to 12 as of Wednesday morning, with the latest fatalities from Western Visayas, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said. In its report at 8 a.m., the NDCC also said 10 were reported injured while two people remained missing, one from Iloilo and one from Negros Occidental. The fatalities were identified as Segundo Habesco Sr., 59, of Bgy. Corocuan in Igbaras town in Iloilo, who died in a landslide; Cheque Escallano, 20, of Bgy. San Ambrosio in Igbaras town in Iloilo, who was swept by a strong water current; Maritess Ladrillo, 17, of Bgy. Ungka II in Pavia town in Iloilo, who was carried away by flood waters; and Eddie Calmaso, 20, of Bgy. Orquia in San Remegio, Antique, who died from drowning. Also reported dead were Loreto Cual, 36, of Valencia in Negros Oriental; and John Kenneth Cambarihan, two months old, of Cauyan town in Negros Occidental, who was hit by a falling tree. Earlier reported dead were Conchita Rosimo, 68; Edralin Rosimo, 4; Sasrah Shiela Provido, 21; Desiree Tabaculdi; Mark Aquino, 4; and George Benitez, 40. Still missing were Edison Lampa, 22, of Igbaras town; and Jerome dela Vida, 8, of Cauyan town in Negros Occidental. Dela Vida was swept by a strong water current, the NDCC said. The NDCC said at least P131.335 million in damage to property was recorded, including P24.585 million in agriculture and P106.75M in infrastructure. It said "Jolina" affected 53,082 families or 221,412 people in 281 villages in four cities and 44 towns in the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Cagayan, Nueva Ecija, Rizal, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Antique, Guimaras, Cebu, Lanao del Sur, and Sultan Kudarat in Maguindanao.
