NY-based Fil-Am writer Ronnie Alejandro dies


CHICAGO, Illinois – New York-based Filipino-American writer Reynaldo “Ronnie" Gamboa Alejandro was found dead in his Greenwich Village apartment last August 7. He was 67.

Rita Shaw, Mr. Alejandro’s Chicago-based cousin, said his body was found by his private nurse at about 9:30 a.m. Mr. Alejandro was suffering from kidney cancer, according to his brother Nolando Alejandro. He said the cancer had metastasized to the liver, causing his brother’s death. Nolando said his brother, who was to turn 68 on October 11, “died peacefully." Mr. Alejandro’s remains were cremated last August 11, and his ashes were scattered the next day in the Hudson River. Born in San Juan, Metro Manila, Mr. Alejandro co-authored the book “Pinoyork" with Eva San Jose Florentino. The book is about Filipino-Americans in The Big Apple. Mr. Alejandro also authored the books “Sayaw Silangan – The Dance of the Philippines," “Philippine Dance," “Philippine Cookbook," “The Flavor of Asia," “Restaurant Design," “Classic Menu Design," and “Pinoy Guide to the Big Apple." Aside from being an author, Mr. Alejandro was also a dancer, choreographer, director, dance and culinary historian, librarian, chef, party planner, columnist, cooking teacher and cultural worker. Mr. Alejandro used to write a weekly column for New York-city based “Filipino Reporter." He also had a dance troupe named after him.
