Pacquiao’s fighter Mayol vows to win WBO crown

Their first fight ending abruptly and his rival keeping the crown, Rodel Mayol vowed to get back at undefeated WBO light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon when they meet again on Sept. 12 in Puerto Rico. Mayol (25-3-1, 19 KOs), a fighter being promoted by Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao, vowed to put an end to Calderon’s (32-0-1, 6 KOs) reign and undefeated streak once and for all. Last June, Mayol fought a badly-cut Calderon in an abbreviated bout that ended in a six-round technical draw, allowing the Puerto Rican to escape with his 108-lb belt. “I am training very hard for this fight because I want the title and I know that I will win the title on September 12," said Mayol, who was trained by Pacquiao’s buddy and trainer Buboy Fernandez when he first challenged Calderon. But the 34-year-old Calderon, who opened a cut on his forehead as a result of an accidental head clash with Mayol, expressed confidence he would hurdle the Filipino’s challenge by fighting his usual fight this time around. Calderon is known for his defensive style and lack of aggression but veered away and tried to stalk Mayol in their showdown. “I made many mistakes in the other fight when I wanted to impress my fans and those watching TV, but this time, I’m going to do my job. My boxing style is to hit and not get hit," said Calderon. The Mayol-Calderon rematch co-headlines the “Undefeated Champions" card which will also feature unbeaten WBO super featherweight champion Ramon “Rocky" Martinez (22-0-1, 13 KOs) in his first defense against Michael Lozado (31-5-1, 24 KOs). The 27-year-old Mayol would be making his fourth shot at the world crown. Prior to that technical draw with Calderon, Mayol had previously lost to WBC minimumweight king Eagle Den Junlaphan via decision in 2006 and to IBF light-flyweight holder Ulises Solis via KO in 2007. - GMANews.TV
