Arroyo allies formally urged to drop Cha-cha in honor of Cory

Militant lawmakers have formalized their calls to halt Charter change efforts in the House of Representatives in deference to the late former President Corazon Aquino by filing a measure asking their colleagues to withdraw their support for a constituent assembly. In House Resolution 1333, eight progressive party-list representatives urged House members to bury efforts to amend the 1987 Constitution by withdrawing their signatures from House Resolution 1109. The lawmakers noted that even on her hospital bed, Mrs. Aquino expressed her opposition to efforts to amend the Constitution through a statement read by her grandson, Kiko Aquino Dee, during the anti-Charter Change rally in Makati City last June 10, 2009. Mrs. Aquino was then confined at the Makati Medical Center where she succumbed last August 1 after several months of battling colon cancer. "There is nothing that causes me greater pain than to see our people betrayed again and again by those they elected," the late democracy icon said in her message. Calls for administration lawmakers to drop efforts to amend the Constitution intensified after Mrs. Aquino's death. HR 1333 was filed by Bayan Muna Representatives Satur Ocampo, Neri Colmenares, and Teodoro Casiño; Gabriela Representatives Liza Maza and Luzviminda Ilagan; Anakpawis Representatives Rafael Mariano and Joel Maglunsod; and Kabataan Rep. Raymond Palatino. Last June 2, majority of lawmakers adopted HR 1109 in a viva voce voting amid strong objections from members of the opposition. - GMANews.TV
