Donaire wants to be undisputed champion

Before he proceeds with plans to move up further in weight, WBA interim super flyweight titlist Nonito “The Filipino Flash" Donaire, Jr. wants to become the undisputed champion in the 115-lb division first. Donaire, who is coming off a unanimous decision victory over an overweight Rafael Concepcion of Panama, is eyeing a showdown with Mexican Jorge “Travieso" Arce in December which could probably be a unification bout. Arce is set to dispute the vacant IBF super flyweight belt with Simphiwe Nongqayi of South Africa next month. If Arce wins, Donaire wants both the IBF and WBA titles as well as the vacant IBO strap on the line for their own fight.

“Yun ang goal ko, ang maging undisputed champion," Donaire said when he graced Tuesday’s PSA Forum along with his wife Rachel. An undisputed champion is a boxer who is recognized as the world champion in that weight class by all the major sanctioning bodies. “Sana manalo si Arce at maganap yung laban namin sa December. Kung makuha ko yung IBO, IBF at WBA, undisputed champion na ako," he added. Another name that popped up as possible rival for Donaire is Japanese Nobuo Nashiro, the WBA super flyweight champion who expressed willingness to take on the Bohol-born fighter in the US. Donaire is also game for a round 2 with Vic Darchinyan, whom he knocked out in spectacular fashion in 2007 to win the IBF and IBO flyweight belts. That is if Darchinyan won’t ask for the moon like before, Donaire stressed. “May possibility pero ilang beses na kasi like before nung lumaban ako dito sa Araneta Coliseum (against Raul Martinez last April), I wanted Darchinyan pero they’re asking for so much money. “Before that, for the (Moruti) Mthalani fight (in 2008), dapat Darchinyan din yun pero they’re asking for too much money. This time, siguro magagawa natin if they won’t demand anything. But I’m not gonna go out and chase after someone who wants something they don’t deserve," he said. After one or two fights at super fly, Donaire intends to climb to bantamweight and challenge WBO 118-lb kingpin Fernando “Cochulito" Montiel of Mexico. His eventual goal, Donaire said, is to become a champion in multiple weight divisions. - Olmin R. Leyba, GMANews.TV
