El Shaddai members oppose Velarde's 2010 bid - bishop

El Shaddai leader Mariano "Mike" Velarde may be abandoning his earlier plans to run for president in 2010, a Catholic bishop close to him said Monday. Retired Bishop Teodoro Bacani Jr. cited lack of support from El Shaddai followers, adding they would rather have him stay as their pastor. “He’s not getting positive responses. El Shaddai members want him to stay in his mission," Bacani, the group's spiritual adviser. "I believe he’s getting the sentiments of the people already," he added. But Bacani pointed out that Velarde never directly declared that he is running for the country’s highest post in the May 2010 elections. He said Velarde was in the “process of consulting" their members as to whether to run or in the May 2010 elections. On the other hand, Bacani admitted that Velarde's political plan affected the unity of his followers due to their varied perception about him crossing over to politics. “Lately, we no longer hear him say anything about it (his political plan). Even before he didn’t directly say that he’s running," he said. - GMANews.TV
