Detained former Abra governor Vicente Valera was transferred from the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center to the Quezon City jail on Thursday upon orders from a court. PNP spokesman Senior Superintendent Leonardo Espina said the transfer was based on a commitment order issued by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 84. Valera was arrested Tuesday for allegedly masterminding the killing of his political rival, former Abra Representative Luis Bersamin Jr., in December 2006. Accompanying Valera to the city jail was his wife and lawyer-daughter Anne Valera, as well as Senior Superintendent Franklin Alfabeto of the PNP Headquarters Support Services. Valera was arrested inside a unit of the Hidalgo Towers in Rockwell, Makati City around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. A joint contingent from the police units of Quezon City and Makati City served the warrant.

Bersamin and his police escort SPO1 Adolfo Ortega were shot dead in front of the Mt. Carmel Church in New Manila, Quezon City on December 16, 2006. Two other people were injured in the shooting. A P250,000 bounty was offered for the capture of Bersamin, and P100,000 for the arrest of his aide, former Army Sgt. Leo Bello. Murder charges were filed against seven people including Valera before the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office in February 2006.
