Noynoy in Zamboanga City for ‘spiritual retreat’

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - Senator Benigno “Noynoy" Aquino III arrived here on Thursday afternoon to seek spiritual advice on whether or not he should heed the calls for him to run for president next year. Aquino, together with a small group of companions, arrived shortly after 4 p.m. from Davao City for a retreat at the Carmelites' Convent. It was the same place where his mother, the late President Corazon "Cory" Aquino, went for a retreat in 1985 before agreeing to run for president in the 1986 snap elections. Aquino visited Davao City earlier Thursday where he met with some of his supporters. He said his visits to the provinces also aim to validate the calls for him to run for the highest position in next year's national elections. “I am trying to validate if there is really a public clamor for me to run in 2010. Without that, it’s too late in the day to mount a campaign," he said. Aquino did not say when he would announce his political plans for 2010. He however hinted that it would be a little beyond September 9, the 40th day after her mother's death last August 1. Other news reports say he is expected to announce his decision on Sept. 10. After his retreat at the Carmelites' Convent, Aquino will return to Manila on Friday and proceed to Tarlac, where he served as congressman, to consult his constituents. Last Wednesday, Liberal Party president Senator Manuel "Mar" Roxas II announced he was giving up his presidential bid to support Aquino. - GMANews.TV
