Malacañang expressed support for proposed laws that is expected to bring in more revenues for the government, including a five-centavo tax on text messages.
“If members of both houses of Congress see it useful for us to have more resources to support projects, then that will be supported by the Palace," Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said.
He added that the matter is still being discussed at the House of Representatives.
On Tuesday, the House Ways and Means Committee passed a bill that will impose a five-centavo tax on every text message sent by 70 million mobile phone users.
To be submitted for plenary next week, the proposal is expected to earn at least P36 billion yearly for the government.
Although presidential economic adviser and Albay Governor Joey Salceda opposed the tax, that is only “the idea of one public official," Ermita said. - GMANews.TV
