A lawmaker wants to rename the 19.7-kilometer C-5 Road after the late President Corazon “Cory" Aquino in line with the government's policy to promote patriotism and nationalism among Filipinos.
“It is the policy of the State to honor outstanding citizens who have made significant contributions that have brought pride and honor to the country and its people," said Agusan del Sur Representative Rodolfo Plaza, author of House Resolution 1318.
Plaza said the C-5 Road, a project that started during the Aquino presidency, deserves a name "that has value and conjures images of strength, national pride, service, nobility and honor."
“The C-5 is a highway that links Valenzuela City, Quezon City, Pasig City, Makati City, Parañaque City and Taguig City and is considered valuable in the efficient delivery of products and services and in the trade and business activities within the National Capital Region," he said.
C-5 also serves as an important link between the NCR and neighboring provinces and other Luzon provinces.
Plaza said Mrs. Aquino, widely acclaimed for leading the peaceful People Power revolution in 1986 that topped the Marcos dictatorship, is regarded by many, including the international community, as an icon of democracy.
Mrs. Aquino died of complications from colon cancer last August 1 and was buried alongside her husband, slain senator Benigno “Ninoy" Aquino Jr., last August 5 at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City. - GMANews.TV
