Maguindanao 'clan war' kills 3; 400 families flee

Three people were killed, one was wounded and 400 families displaced by an armed clash stemming from a family feud in Maguindanao province over the weekend. The hostilities erupted between the clans of Pagalungan town Vice Mayor Salik Mamasabulod and Datukan "Commander Lastikman" Samad. "The conflict started when the group of Commander Lastikman allegedly killed one of the relatives of Vice Mayor Mamasabulod. It was also alleged that Commander Lastikman harassed and burned 27 houses in Barangay Balongis in Pikit, North Cotabato where 400 families have been displaced," the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said in a report dated Saturday but posted on its Web site Sunday. According to the NDCC, the incident occurred at 2 p.m. Friday at Damalasak village in Pagalungan. The initial report, however, did not give details of the people killed in the skirmish. NDCC said the local Department of Social Welfare and Development is assisting the 400 families who sought refuge in Poblacion village in the town. Also, the local police and military have provided security to Damalasak and Bolangis villages as well as other areas in Pagalungan and Pikit where Lastikman may strike again. - GMANews.TV
