Report: Mayol to get title shot vs Sosa

After back-to-back disappointment against WBO light-flyweight champion Ivan Calderon, hardluck Filipino prospect Rodel Mayol will reportedly get another shot at the world title, this time against WBC titlist Edgar Sosa of Mexico. Mayol, a fighter being promoted by Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao, is being considered to be the challenger when Sosa defends his WBC strap for the 11th time on Nov. 21 in Tuxla Gutierrez, Chappas, Mexico, Fightnews.com reported Thursday.

If this materializes, this will be Mayol’s fifth attempt at the world title after losing to WBC minimumweight king Eagle Den Junlaphan via decision in 2006 and to IBF light-flyweight holder Ulises Solis via KO in 2007 and his two futile bids against Calderon. This year, 27-year-old Mayol challenged unbeaten Puerto Rican WBO kingpin Calderon in two abbreviated title fights. Last June, Mayol and Calderon fought through six rounds with the badly-cut Puerto Rican escaping with the crown after a split technical draw. In their rematch last week, Calderon once again suffered a laceration and earned a seven-round split technical decision, thwarting Mayol for a second time. “I think Mayol proved how worthy a fighter he is against a great champion like Calderon, giving Ivan the hardest fights of his career. If the fight is confirmed, I expect a very difficult challenge from Mayol," Sosa was quoted in the Fightnews report. Sosa, who had also expressed interest to take on another champ in IBF boss Brian Viloria, is said to be making one last fight at the 108-lb division before moving up to flyweight next year. Calderon and Viloria, meanwhile, are reportedly eyeing a unification fight. – GMANews.TV
