‘Ondoy’ prompts travel advisory from Canada

The floods brought by tropical storm "Ondoy" (Ketsana) has prompted a travel advisory from the Canadian government on Rizal province and other affected areas. In its travel advisory updated Monday, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada urged Canadians to "exercise a high degree of caution" in these areas. "Overland travel in Metro Manila and in the province of Rizal is severely impacted. As a result, the provision of essential services could be disrupted. Canadians in the affected areas should exercise caution, monitor local news and weather reports, and follow the advice of local authorities," it said. The Canadian government noted flash floods forced the evacuation of thousands of people in Metro Manila and in Rizal province. A total of 140 people were confirmed dead due to "Ondoy," which caused floods and landslides in several areas in Metro Manila and nearby provinces. The Canadian government also cautioned its citizens that "significant delays or flight cancellation can be expected." The Canadian government said the Philippines is subject to typhoons, and that Canadians should be aware that "storms could occur quickly, veer in unexpected directions and quickly increase in intensity." "During any storm, flash floods and mudslides may occur. Delivery of essential services may be interrupted including medical services, power and telecommunications. Transportation routes and infrastructure damage may occur and Canadians are advised to maintain a flexible schedule to allow for unexpected interruptions," it said. - GMANews.TV
