‘Pepeng’ causes price hike in flowers too

Not only did typhoon "Pepeng' cause prices of vegetables to sky-rocket in Metro Manila, it also triggered an increase in the prices of flowers coming from northern Philippines.

Radio dzBB’s Roland Bola reported Tuesday that in Manila, the prices of flowers, especially those from the north, spiked to nearly three times their normal prices.

At the Dangwa area in Manila’s Dimasalang district, prices of flowers from Baguio and Benguet went up from P60 to about P200 a dozen.

Some flower vendors resorted to selling orchids imported from Thailand due to the lack of supply, while others temporarily closed shop.

Flower vendors in Manila are preparing to sell flower arrangements for the coming All Saints weekend. The flowers then find their way in cemeteries either within Metro Manila or in the provinces.

Vegetables

On Monday, the prices of vegetables were reported to have increased up to five times their normal rates due to Pepeng. As a result, the Department of Agriculture even announced it would be getting vegetables from lowland areas and send the same to Metro Manila. Baguio City was virtually isolated last weekend after rains and floods brought by Pepeng forced the closure of three major roads leading to it.

Public works officials managed to partially open Kennon Road Monday but imposed a schedule there to manage the flow of traffic. [See: Authorities impose traffic schedule on Kennon Road]

But the Department of Public Works and Highways said it expects the isolation to end soon with the partial reopening of Naguilian Road and Marcos Highway. [See: Baguio woes to ease as 3 major roads reopen partially]

DPWH Undersecretary Romeo Momo noted that Naguilian Road can accommodate trucks with heavy loads that can bring much-needed food and fuel supplies to the city. - GMANews.TV
