Tropical storm "Lupit" intensified as it continued to close in on Philippine territory Friday morning, state weather forecasters said.
Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecaster Leny Ruiz said the storm's present trajectory appears to be Northern Luzon again.
"Ang masama, ang trajectory niya is Northern Luzon (What is bad is that its trajectory appears to be Northern Luzon)" Ruiz said in an interview on dzBB radio, after reading Pagasa's 11 a.m. advisory on Lupit.
Northern Luzon is still reeling from the effects of typhoon "Pepeng" (Parma), which made landfall on the area thrice.
Citing Pagasa's 11 a.m. advisory, Ruiz said Lupit was 1,300 km east of Bicol as of 10 a.m., with maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph.
He said Lupit was moving west northwest at 26 kph in the general direction of Central and Northern Luzon-Taiwan.
"It is expected to further intensify before it enters the Philippine area of responsibility this evening," he said.
But Ruiz said Lupit, which will be code-named "Ramil" upon entering Philippine territory, will have no immediate direct effect on the country.
"Wala pang direct effect yan. Ito [ay] papasok mamayang gabi sa area of responsibility natin (It will not have any direct effect yet when it enters Philippine territory tonight)," he said.
Pagasa, in its 11 a.m. advisory, also said the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ) will continue to affect Southern Luzon and Visayas.
It said this will bring mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms to these areas. - GMANews.TV
