Employers urged: Allow workers to register during office hours

With just 12 days before the voter’s registration ends, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has urged employers in the private sector to allow their eligible workers to register for the 2010 elections even during office hours. "Taking into consideration that the deadline for registration is fast approaching, all employers in the private sector are urged to allow employees to participate in the registration activities even during working days and to consider their temporary absence from work on official time," Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said in a statement. He said DOLE Advisory No. 7 Series of 2009 issued last October 5 enjoins all employers in the sector to comply with the implementation of Republic Act No. 8189, otherwise known as the “Continuing Voter’s Registration Act of 1996." "(This will allow workers to) affirm their rights as citizens of the country to vote in the forthcoming 2010 elections, and reinforce the democracy enjoyed by the country," Roque said. Earlier, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) had requested the DOLE through its Resolution No. 8669, to issue guidelines urging private sector employers to allow their employees to file their applications for registration even on weekdays. The Comelec specifically asked that an employee’s absence from work, for the purpose of registering, be considered as official time. The poll body had likewise requested the Civil Service Commission to do the same for employees in the public sector. Comelec Resolution No. 8514 requires that the dates for the filing of applications for registration, or transfer, reactivation, correction, and reinstatement of name in the registration records be held only from Dec. 2, 2008 to Oct. 31, 2009. - Kim Tan, GMANews.TV
