Combined death toll from Pepeng, Ondoy now at 858 - NDCC


The combined death toll from tropical storm "Ondoy" and typhoon "Pepeng" has already reached 858 as of Monday morning, figures from the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) showed. In its 6 a.m. report, the NDCC said Pepeng's death toll was at 438, while Ondoy's was at 420. According to the NDCC, Pepeng (international name: Parma), killed 364 in the Cordilleras, 74 in the Ilocos Region, 13 in Central Luzon, four in the Bicol region, and one in Calabarzon. "The reported deaths in CAR were mainly due to landslides while those in other regions were due to drowning," the report said. At least 182 people were also reported injured, while 51 more remained missing. More than four million people or about 883,596 families have also been affected after Pepeng wreaked havoc in northern Luzon starting Oct. 3. Damage to property was estimated at P16.553 billion, including P4.863 billion in infrastructure and P11.687 billion in agriculture. Meanwhile, authorities pegged the damage caused by “Ondoy" at P11.162 billion, including P4.396 billion in infrastructure and P6.766 billion in agriculture. The NDCC also said that a total of 896,257 families or 4,348,884 people have been affected by the tropical storm, which brought a month's equivalent of rainfall in a span of 24 hours. As of posting time, more than 112 barangays (villages) in 21 municipalities of Laguna and Rizal in Calabarzon region remained flooded with water ranging from knee to waist deep since “Ondoy" struck the country last Sept. 26. - GMANews.TV
