UP, UST capture Hao Chin table netfest team crowns

University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas ruled their respective divisions in the recently concluded 2009 Hao Chin Sr. Memorial National Inter-Scholastic Table Tennis Championship at the Blue Eagle Gym inside the Ateneo campus in Katipunan.
UP scored a 3-0 sweep of University of Perpetual Help while UST escaped with a 3-2 triumph over Saint Martin to claim the men’s and women’s division crowns in the event organized by Ateneo athletic director Ricky Palou and sanctioned by the Table Tennis Association of the Philippines (TATAP).
UP’s Champ Nanaman needed five sets to beat Jojo Almazan, 8-11, 9-11, 11-3, 11-9, 12-10, in the first single match while Leo De Leon cruised to an 11-4, 11-5, 11-7 in the second singles match.
Randy Balingit and Joven Cobanta completed the sweep when they blanked Perpetual Help’s Angel Carandang and Robert Rosales.
In the women’s division, Nessy Aragon saved UST’s title hopes when she pulled off an easy 11-9, 11-8, 11-3 win over Joma Sibal that broke the 2-2 tie.
Aragon and Charisma Capistrano bested Rowena Morales (11-7, 11-7, 11-4) and Sibal (13-11, 11-7, 11-4) as the Tigresses went up 2-0.
Saint Martin’s Bea Magpantay and Nishino Nokiko put their team on the scoreboard with a three-sets-to-one victory over Jennyca Sequena and Jovie Bonzon while Magpantay tied it with an 11-9, 11-8, 11-7 win over Capistrano.
In other championship matches, Tapia Elementary School outplayed Mabatang Elementary School, 3-0, for the boy’s title while Joyful Angel School defeated Tapia Elementary School, 3-0, for the girl’s crown. – GMANews.TV
