The Philippines’ Jeson Patrombon continued his giant-killing ways to nail a quarterfinal spot in the Osaka Mayor’s Cup-World Super Junior Tennis Championships 2009 in Osaka, Japan.
Unseeded in the tournament, Patrombon (ranked no. 234 in the world) claimed the scalp of yet another seeded player in No. 15 Vaidik Munshaw of India (137th in the world), 6-3, 6-3.
The upset, his second straight after taking out fourth seed and world no. 17 Shuichi Sekiguchi of Japan, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, sent the 16-year-old Filipino netter into the Last 8 against 11th seed Jason Murray Kubler of Australia.
Ranked 106th in the ITF juniors list, reigning Oceania Closed junior championship titlist Kubler advanced to the quarters after pulling off his own 6-0, 6-1 upset victory over fifth seed Hsieh Cheng-Peng of Chinese Taipei, the reigning Australian junior and US Open junior doubles titlist.
Also reaching the quarterfinals of the Grade A tournament were Takeshi Endo of Japan, who stunned top seed, world no. 2 and reigning Junior French Open singles champ Daniel Berta of Sweden, 6-2, 7-5; ninth seed Yasutaka Uchiyama of Japan, 6-3, 6-3 winner over Filip Horansky of Slovak Republic;
Second seed and world no. 4 Liang Chi Huang of Chinese Taipei, 6-1, 6-4 winner over Australian Luke Saville; eighth seed Hiroyasu Ehara, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 winner over Britain’s Robert Carter; third seed Pierre Hugues Herbert of France, 7-5, 6-2 winner over 14th seed Taro Daniel of Japan; and Jea Moon Lee of Korea, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 winner over 10th seed Ben McLachan of New Zealand.
Lee was the same player who cut short the bid of seventh seed Francis Casey Alcantara, the Philippines’ top junior player and Hsieh's winning partner in the 2009 Australian Open junior doubles, via a 6-2 6-3 triumph in the second round. - GMANews.TV
