Fewer people are buying flowers for All Souls’ Day, but this did not stop flower vendors from raising prices of their products.
In Manila's Dangwa district, flower vendors complained of low sales, with people choosing to buy candles instead of flowers.
"Siyempre sa hirap ng buhay ngayon iba nagiging practical na lang, ‘di masyadong bumibili, pakonti-konti na lang. Ang iba kandila na lang, di tulad dati marami (Times are hard and people become more practical. Some buy fewer flowers than they used to buy, while others just skip the flowers and buy candles)," Beth Blanco, a flower vendor in the Dangwa area, said in an interview on dwIZ radio.
However, the dwIZ report said other flower vendors expect sales to rise as All Souls’ Day draws closer, when people prepare to go home to the provinces to pay respects to their dead.
The report also said prices of flowers have almost doubled in time for the occasion.
Prices of flower baskets now cost P250 from the usual P150, while bouquets cost P300, up from the usual P200.
Malaysian mums that used to cost P100 a dozen now go from P120 to P150, while orchids go from P200 to as high as P380, while Anthurium flowers cost P350 and roses cost P120.
A bouquet of roses that usually cost P180 now costs P250.
The report also said flower vendors still get a short supply of flowers from North Luzon after tropical cyclone "Pepeng" (Parma) ravaged the region.
However, they are getting their supplies from other areas such as Cebu, Davao, Cotabato and Tagaytay. - GMANews.TV
