In a text message, Cagayan region police head Chief Superintendent Roberto Damian said that a Dagupan Bus Lines bus bound for Tuao, Cagayan province collided with a Toyota Hilux pick-up along the national highway in Barangay (village) Tagaran in Cauayan City.

The incident occurred about 3:30 a.m., Damian said.

Damian also told dzBB radio that the eight fatalities included the pick-up’s driver, identified as one Perlito Bautista, and seven bus passengers. Six bodies were brought to the Funeraria Carbonel in Cauayan City.

Fourteen of those who were wounded were rushed to the Cauayan District Hospital, while 10 were taken to the Garcias General Hospital in the city.

In the radio interview, the police officer said that the bus hit the Toyota Hilux after making a swerve.

"Nag-swerve ang bus, tumama sa Hilux. Nahulog sa bangin yung bus (The bus made a swerve, and then it hit the Hilux. The bus then fell down the ravine)," Damian said.

He added they are still investigating the incident as of posting time. - with a report from Sophia Dedace, GMANews.TV
