Two former Filipino guards in the United Arab Emirates were meted six-month jail terms for stealing belongings of guests in the hotel where they worked.
A report on UAE-based Khaleej Times said the Court of First Instance also ordered the deportation of the two Filipinos after serving their jail terms.
While the report did not name the two Filipinos, it described them as both in their early 30s, and who were working for Atlantis Hotel when they committed the thefts.
One was accused of stealing three mobile phones, two wallets with cash and credit cards belonging to a Gulf national and his son.
The other defendant was accused of possession of the mobile phones and Dh300 (P3,921.73) of the money stolen from the guests.
A police officer said they tracked down the defendants after one of the stolen mobile phones was used in the theft committed last July.
Investigation showed a Filipino woman used one of the stolen mobile phones. The woman was a friend of the second defendant, police added.
The woman told the police her friend, who worked as a security guard at Atlantis, gave her the phone.
"That security guard said that his colleague (the first defendant) gave him the mobile phone and Dh300 for keeping his mouth shut over the theft," the officer said.
When police went to the first defendant’s place, he admitted to stealing the guests’ belongings.
"The first defendant claimed that he got rid of the two wallets along with the cards while he spent the stolen money. He handed over two phones," the officer said. - GMANews.TV
