He already made his choice, but Sen. Manuel Villar Jr. is not yet ready to identify his running mate in the 2010 elections.
“Sa akin naman ay hindi naman natin pwedeng i-announce ‘yan. Ang sabi ko lang, hanggang doon lang tayo sa may napili na tayo pero hindi pa tayo talaga nakahandang sabihin kung sino ‘yun," the senator told reporters on Tuesday.
(We cannot announce our choice yet. What I can say is we have already picked our vice presidential bet but we are not yet ready to make it public.)
Villar, president of the Nacionalista Party (NP) refused to say if his running mate would be Nationalist People's Coalition vice presidential bet, Sen. Loren Legarda, or Sen. Francis "Chiz" Escudero, who recently bolted the NPC.
NP and NPC officials have also remained mum on reports that they have already coalesced to launch a Villar-Legarda tandem for the 2010 polls.
Earlier in the day, NPC chairman Faustino Dy denied that there had been talks for a Villar-Legarda team-up, but said that the party had received feelers from NP. (See: NPC admits being 'wooed' by several political parties)
The NP would formally announce its presidential, vice presidential, and senatorial bets during its national convention on November 15, according to Villar.
"(S)yempre dahil kailangan din naman na isangguni natin sa kanila kung ano ang magandang timing nito... Isasangguni rin natin ito formally sa council ng partido," Villar said.
(We want a good timing before announcing it and of course we need to consult our members. We will also formally consult the council of the party.)
The senator said he made the "best choice."
"I... chose someone who can run the country once something bad happens to the President. It is important that my running mate has the ability to lead the country," he said in Filipino." - AMITA O. LEGASPI, GMANews.TV
