Days of selling illegal drugs in their sari-sari (variety) store ended Tuesday for a couple linked to the drug trade in Pasay City after an early-morning raid by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
PDEA agents arrested Gerry Punzalan and his wife Pat during the raid on their house in Apelo Cruz Street in Barangay 157 in the city’s Malibay district.
“Napakalakas ng loob ng mga ito, open na open sa tindahan nagbebenta. Sari-sari store na kasama sa item ang drugs," PDEA chief Dionisio Santiago said in an interview on dzRH radio.
(This couple is brazen. They sell drugs openly in their sari-sari store.)
During the raid, PDEA operatives seized several packs of methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) worth some P300,000.
Radio dzBB’s Manny Vargas reported that PDEA and police operatives also seized a cal-.45 pistol belonging to one of the suspected drug dealers.
Santiago said the couple was in the PDEA’s order of battle, and that they had already obtained a warrant to search their home.
“Ilang araw na ang warrant na yan. Di lang kami makatyempo nang maganda. Kanina lang na-implement nang husto noong nandoon na mga tao," he said.
(We already had the warrants for days but we could not implement them because they were not at home. When we learned they were home today, we served the warrants.)
He said the PDEA is “closing ranks with the prosecution" to tighten the case against the couple.
The raiding teams served search warrants on at least four houses along Apelo Cruz Street in Barangay 157 in Malibay district in Pasay City.
