A night of monsoon rain

They are so near and yet so far.
The white night fog brings monsoon rains
That play tricks on my window panes.
Twin forest orchids dance, then twist
And fade away in verdant mist.
Oh why do they have to be
So near and yet so far.

She is so near and yet so far.
The goddess moon reflects a cool
And quiet shimmer on a river pool.
My fingers trace her rippling folds,
But the image shatters a millionfold,
A sparkling flash of myriad star
So near and yet so distant far.

You are so far and yet so near.
The monsoon sea wind damps these eyes
With fine silk rain from other skies.
A mere faint glow, a lone star light
Brings subtle scents of jasmine night.
I could accept that you're not here.
But why so far and yet so near.

We are so far and yet so near.
The ancient sierra foothills greet
And scratch our muddy hobbits' feet,
But the phantom dreamers that we seek
Are out of reach on cloudy peaks.
They're neither truly there nor here,
And we're so far and yet so near.
