RP ice skater tops division in Slovakia Cup

Michael Christian Martinez bested his European opponents, including Polish champion Krzysztof Gala, to win the novice boys’ division in the recently concluded Trnava Ice Cup in Trnava, Slovakia.
The 12-year-old Martinez tallied 95.87 points to against the 71.74 compiled by Gala, who came in second in the International Skating Federation (ISF)-organized tournament.
Hometown bet Peter Novella settled for the bronze with 68.31 points while Piotor Horosz, also from Poland, finished fourth (44.69)
Martinez also topped the novice boys’ freeskating division in the 2009 Ice Challenge at Graz, Austria collecting 64.71 points to beat skaters from Austria, Britain and Romania.
Joining Martinez in the Trnava Ice Cup were teammates Naomi Damian and Chelcie Jo Mahinay (novice girls), and Kathryn Magno and Katrina Phan (senior ladies).
Mahinay placed 17th with 34.17 points while Damian finished 19th (31.12). Both skaters faced tough competition against representatives from Czech Republic, Britain, Germany, Croatia, Italy, Slovakiam Poland, Latvia and other European countries.
All five skaters are members of the Philippine national ice skating team governed by the Philippine Ice Skating Union. – GMANews.TV
