NPA warns Army vs rescuing abducted corporal in Mindanao

Mindanao-based New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas warned the military Saturday against trying to rescue an Army corporal the communist-rebels abducted in Compostela Valley last Monday.

NPA Southern Mindanao regional political spokesman Simon Santiago said the Army’s 10th Infantry Division’s rescue efforts are endangering the release of Cpl. Dominador Alegre.

“(The) 10th ID-AFP’s condescending and irrational attitude towards their very own personnel captured and declared as POWs by the NPA and their families is a stumbling block to the possibility for an early, safe and orderly release of the POW," Santiago said in a statement on
the Communist Party of the Philippines website.

He said the NPA and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) in Southern Mindanao are tackling the case of Alegre, a corporal of the 72nd Infantry Battalion.

Santiago maintained Alegre is in good condition as a prisoner of war.

But he also claimed the military’s continued “human rights abuses" in the course of their rescue operation are threatening to block Alegre’s early release.

“Human rights abuses committed by the 7th Special Operations Company-AFP and the 25th IB-AFP against civilians in Monkayo, Compostela Valley continue to this day as they conduct their so-called rescue operation. Already, threats and harassments have mounted and civilian Eddie Tayag of Brgy. Casoon was baselessly arrested the other day," he said.

Santiago stressed that the military's actions are an act of "fascist arrogance." He said revolutionary forces have consistently shown that it is open to "well-meaning appeals for the release of prisoners of war."

NPAs abducted Alegre, who headed a paramilitary detachment in Compostela Valley, Monday night while his men were paying respects to their dearly departed.

Capt. Emmanuel Garcia, spokesman of the Army's 10th Infantry Battalion, said 16 NPAs introduced themselves as soldiers, then pointed guns at the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) paramilitary units and disarmed them.

Garcia said the incident took place at New Kapatagan village in Monkayo town at 5 p.m. Monday.

The NPAs also made off with 18 firearms, rounds of ammunition, AFP uniforms, backpacks, bandoliers and combat boots. - GMANews.TV
