For the 48th time this year, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will visit her home province Wednesday, further fueling speculations she will run for congresswoman representing Pampanga’s second district in next year’s elections.
A Malacañang statement said Mrs. Arroyo will be in Floridablanca town to lead a turnover ceremony of the first Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax), a telecommunications technology application that provides high-speed wireless Internet access to a wider area.
"This (visit) is in line with the government's continuing efforts to provide Internet connections, computer literacy training, and access to on-line content for public high schools, particularly in the countryside," a Palace statement said.
On November 5, less than 24 hours after her last trip to the province, the President went back to her home province for her 47th visit since January this year.
Floridablanca is in the province's second district, where Mrs. Arroyo is said to be planning to run for a House seat.
Mrs. Arroyo's critics accused her of planning to stay in power by running for congresswoman, while her allies in the House are making moves for a shift to a parliamentary form of government. The shift to parliament would allow Mrs. Arroyo - if she wins a House seat in 2010 - a fair chance of becoming a prime minister.
On Monday, no less than the President's half sister - former Pampanga vice governor Cielo Macapagal Salgado - appealed to Mrs. Arroyo to give others a chance in the battle for the 2nd congressional district in the province. [See: To avoid 2010 battle, half-sis asks PGMA to give way]
"Nakasiyam na taon na siya di ba? You have reached the highest post na binigay sa iyo ng mamamayan. Binigyan ka na ng pagkakataon, bigyan mo naman ng pagkakataon 'yung iba," Salgado said in an interview with GMA News, adding that she is being encouraged to seek the post by incumbent Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio.
Agenda for visit
Meanwhile, the Palace said Wednesday's turnover rites will be held at the Paguiruan High School (PHS), a recipient of the Smart Schools Program (SSP), Smart Communications' flagship in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Under SSP, PHS will be connected to the Internet via WiMax, the first in SSP’s network of 270 schools.
Apart from connectivity, PHS will receive a Smart Teacher’s Learning Resource Center (STLRC) consisting of two computers, two web cameras, a printer and scanner. - GMANews.TV
