Once having a mighty frontline, San Miguel faced the dilemma of playing a small unit against a Purefoods team loaded up front.
But instead, the Beermen played to their strength and set aside their deficiency.
Using a three-guard line up for most part of the match, the Beermen ripped the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants, 92-76, for their fifth straight victory in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.
With two-time Most Valuable Player Danny Ildefonso, former Rookie of the Year Danny Seigle, promising forward Jay Washington and back-up forward Mike Holper all watching from the sidelines, San Miguel Beer coach Siot Tanquingcen utilized his backcourt depth.
“Sometimes God puts you in a situation where you have to deal with this kind of problem. We’re reduced to a team that has more guards than any other squad. Kung tutuusin para nga kaming security agency sa dami ng guwardiya. But this is a way to test ourselves as well and we passed that test," said Tanquingcen.
They were able to take a commanding 22-point lead on a basket by Jonas Villanueva, 58-36, 6:58 left in the third period.
But the Giants refused to fold up easily.
Behind guard Paul Artadi, who provided the spark for his team, the sleeping Giants woke up in the final quarter and charged back to within six, 70-76, on a three-pointer by Kerby Raymundo, 5:54 left.
San Miguel answered back with a 6-2 run and Purefoods committed five turnovers in its last six possessions, allowing the Beermen to become the second team since Alaska to win five in a row this conference. - GMANews.TV
