Pacesetting University of Santo Tomas regained its winning ways, subduing Adamson University, 14-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20, in the quarterfinal round of the Shakey’s V-League Season 6 second conference at the The Arena in San Juan City.
After losing the first frame, the Tigresses led by their hurting team captain Aiza Maizo swept the next three sets to bounce back from their surprise lost to San Sebastian College Tuesday.
Maizo, who is still nursing a sprained right ankle, powered the Tigresses with a game-high 26-points, seven of which she scattered in the fourth frame where she teamed up with teammate Maika Ortiz in dismantling the Lady Falcons’ final surge.
Despite being outspiked by the Lady Falcons, 43-45, the Tigresses leaned on their solid blocking as they posted 19 points on blocks compared to only six by the Lady Falcons.
Maizo accounted for nine of these points while Ortiz added six, including three in their crippling 11-2 run in the fourth frame that sealed their triumph.
With the win, the Tigresses upped their record to 8-1 (win-loss) while the Lady Falcons dropped to solo fourth with an even 5-5 slate.
“Siguro ensayado lang," quipped Tigresses Coach Cesael de los Santos, who did not even field in their guest player Roxanne Pimentel to reinforce team against Adamson.
Ortiz contributed 14 points to the victory while Ma. Angeli Tabaquero added 11 points and another tower, Hannah Mance, chipped in seven markers.
The Tigresses aim to solidify their grip of the top spot when they take on College of St. Benilde in the first match Sunday at 4 p.m.
The Lady Blazers badly needs the win to hang on to their slim chance of making it to the next round.
Second-running FEU Lady Tamaraws, meanwhile, eye their second win in the quarterfinals against unpredictable San Sebastian College in the main game at 4 p.m. - GMANews.TV
