SAN JOSE CITY, Nueva Ecija - Eight farm workers died while another was hurt after the vehicle they were riding figured in an accident along Maharlika Highway in Nueva Ecija province Saturday morning.

The victims were riding a 10-wheeler truck (plate no: RMG-432) that fell on its left side after its driver, Glorioso Tobias, lost control of the steering wheel. The vehicle loaded with sacks of palay (unhusked rice) was along the highway in Barangay Tayabo, San Jose City when the incident took place at about 8:45 a.m.

Six of the fatalities were identified by authorities as Romeo Ortiz; Salvador Villareal; Renato Villanueva; Narciso Ortiz Jr.; Jerry Gaspar, all residents of Barangay Sta. Monica in Rizal and Fidel Ayap, of Barangay Sto. Niño 3rd in San Jose City. They all died on-the-spot due to head injuries.

The portion of the highway is a known accident-prone area due to its curvy road, which is in a downward path coming from the mountains. The driver might have been distracted by the treacherous route, according to the province's senior police officer 3, Mario Pastor.

Authorities will file charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide against Tobias who immediately surrendered to authorities after the incident. - GMANews.TV
