Senate OKs 5 resolutions commending Pacquiao

The Senate on Monday commended and even asked for the conferring of highest national honors on Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao for beating Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) and setting a new world record. The chamber adopted the five resolutions filed by Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, Senators Francis Pangilinan, Richard Gordon, Lito Lapid, Manuel Villar Jr congratulating Pacquiao for being the first boxer to become a title holder in seven different weight divisions. “Manny Pacquaio must be conferred the highest national recognition given to a Filipino for his significant contributions to the country in the field of sports, and for being one of the best boxers in the world," said Pangilinan in his Senate Resolution 1465. Pacquiao defeated Cotto by technical knockout in Round 12 of their fight in MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and clinched the World Boxing Organization welterweight title. He also holds the title in flyweight, super bantamweight, featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight, and light welterweight divisions. In Senate Resolution 1465, Pangilinan noted Pacquiao’s modesty despite his success while in SR 1464, Zubiri said the boxing icon’s godliness sets a good example to the youth. “Such trait reflects that he is truly a role mode for the Filipino youth," Zubiri said. For his part, Gordon said Pacquiao’s victory has once again lifted the hopes and dreams of the Filipinos and showed the way to rise up from adversity and be a leader in their chosen craft. In Resolution 1462, Lapid said Pacquiao has made the country proud and shown the world the unrelenting spirit of Filipino competitiveness and excellence. Villar said Pacquiao inspires Filipinos to excel in their undertakings to achieve success and world recognition even during challenging times. - GMANews.TV
