Marikina residents turn baseball field into methane gas kitchen

Methane gas oozing from a former baseball field in Marikina City has become an attraction for local residents affected by recent tropical storm Ondoy (Ketsana). Several families in Nangka village in Marikina City flocked to the area where seeping methane gas was, to cook their food or boil their drinking water. "Napakalaking tulong sa amin yan. Mahal ang Metro Gas ... Kami walang wala, kung di sa apoy na ito gagatong kami ng panggatong (It is a blessing to us. Liquefied petroleum gas is so expensive. If it were not for this gas, we would have nothing to boil water or cook food with)," resident Helen Iguares said in an interview on dzBB radio. A report by dzBB's Sam Nielsen said at least 100 families in the area had flocked to the site in the last three weeks. The Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) plans to send an engineering team to the site to determine if it is safe. Residents asked the government not to keep them away from the site if it is found to be safe. In the meantime, local village officials have started coordinating with the Philippine National Police to secure the area and keep families from fighting for a place near the seeping methane gas. - GMANews.TV
