Pinoy champ Sonsona’s strategy: Stalk Hernandez

The Philippines’ WBO super flyweight champion Marvin Sonsona intends to be the aggressor against Mexican challenger Alejandro Hernandez in their showdown on Saturday at the Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada (Sunday in Manila). Sonsona and his trainer Nonito Donaire, Sr. said going on the attack mode will be the best way to go against Hernandez, who’s not known as a boxer who fights toe-to-toe. “Gagawin ko na lang talaga dito, susugurin ko siya kasi kapag sinugod ko siya, mawawala yung style niya," the 19-year-old Sonsona told GMA 7. Donaire reiterated his earlier claim that the unbeaten champion (14-0, 12 KOs) will eventually catch Hernandez with his vaunted power shots. “Noong nakita ko ang last na laban ni Hernandez, puro takbo, Takbo nang takbo, saka walang lakas. So malaki ang posibilidad na babagsak din kay Marvin ito," Donaire, Sr. said for his part. Sonsona, the pride of General Santos City considered as the next Manny Pacquiao, will be defending the WBO 115-lb division belt for the first time. He won the strap after dominating veteran Jose “Carita" Lopez of Puerto Rico via unanimous decision two months back in the same venue. A former WBO Latino champion, Hernandez (22-7, 11 KOs) is coming off a failed bid to win the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) flyweight crown in Mexico last September.
Adding further inspiration to the teenaged champ was the victory of his cousin, Eden Sonsona (second round KO) underneath the Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight over the weekend in Las Vegas. “Excited talaga ako sa laban na ito," he declared. Seeing action in the undercard is compatriot Ciso Morales, who will duke it out with Mexican Miguel Angel Piedras in a junior featherweight clash. - GMANews.TV
