Companies wanting to reach and market to children would do well to create new media content given the latter’s increasing use of mobile phones and the internet.
"There is more consumption of more media and marketers should take advantage of the new media which is powerful," Turner Entertainment Networks Asia vice-president Jeremy Carr said in a press briefing on Thursday.
A recent study by Turner-owned Cartoon Network showed that many internet users in the Philippines were children aged 10-19, with a big chunk playing online games.
Children also prefer the PC to playing outside, at 64 percent.
Mr. Carr added that by 2012 there could be at least 15 million kids using mobile phones to surf the internet and that "the challenge is how to capitalize on mobile as a tool."
Cartoon Network, he said, has found success in attracting visitors to its website.
"We have around 340,000 unique users who are playing games on our website averaging about 34 minutes per visit. And there are 70,000 unique users that actually seek parental consent before entering the site," said Mr. Carr.
For firms seeking to duplicate this, "The best thing to do is to acquire quality content and create your own original content because it is the relevant content that keeps kids interested," he said. - BusinessWorld
